SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher spoke of his pride for his players following tonight’s 2-0 win against Dorking Wanderers.

Goals from Gus Scott-Morriss and Harry Cardwell saw the Shrimpers record all three points at Roots Hall.

But Maher appeared aggrieved Blues have not got more credit for what they have achieved in testing times this season.

“We would be on 60 points now with eight games to go which is unbelievable,” said Maher.

“I know people won’t be happy and say it doesn’t matter but it is unbelievable.

“What these players have done and what the staff have done and everyone at the football has done to be seventh like we would be after no pre-season is unbelievable.

“That’s why I get a bit frustrated on the side because I will back these players one million per cent.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of them and that’s why I get a bit frustrated when people moan saying shoot and things like that.

“Deon (Woodman) is breaking forward, you can hear the crowd going shoot but he’s 35 yards out.

“Just keep the ball, don’t be silly and stay calm.”

But Maher’s praise for the Shrimpers did not stop there.

“As a football club we’ve done unbelievably well and the supporters have been unbelievable but the tension sometimes get to the players and you can feel it,” said Maher.

“You can feel some noise around the place and I’m sure people will tell me it’s not good enough and we should be doing this and that but we haven’t got the right to do anything in this league.

“Yes we’re a big club but we’ve got a long way to go and what we’ve done this season.”
