SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher says Ollie Kensdale’s England C call-up is well-deserved recognition for the defender’s consistent season.

Kensdale has made 42 appearances for Blues at the heart of the back three this term.

And Maher feels the centre-back’s first international call-up is the best possible way for his campaign to end.

“I’m delighted for him and he deserves it because he’s been so consistent throughout the season with the amount of games he’s played,” said Maher.

“He’s played well and shown what a good footballer he is.

“It’s good recognition for him and’s it a really good way for him to end the season.”

Kensdale is part of a 16 man squad for the match against Nepal at Aldershot Town’s EBB Stadium next Monday.

And Blues could have had other players selected had the match been played at a different time of year with Gus Scott-Morriss, Jack Bridge and Cav Miley believed to be among those who had been considered for the game.

“There was a bigger group which has then come down due to people who couldn’t make it.” said Maher.

“We did have a few more in that shortlist but they’re away.”

The Shrimpers ended their National League season on Saturday April 20 and members of the squad have since opted to go on holiday.
