FORMER Southend United boss Steve Tilson has stepped down from his role as Heybridge Swifts manager.

Tilson had been in charge of the Swifts since September 2021 but has now opted move on.

In a statement issued to the Echo tonight, Tilson said: "After reaching the play-off final last season and finishing seventh this season I’m absolutely gutted to have had to make the decision to leave the club.

"Due to financial circumstances the budget I was offered for next season was significantly lower than last season which meant I would not have been able to keep my team together which we have worked so hard to build over the last couple of seasons.

"I would just like to say a big thank you to all the supporters for getting behind the team and a big thank you to the players, Ash, Chris and the staff who made my journey at Heybridge so enjoyable.

"I wish the club all the best for the future."
