RYAN Peniston will return to his roots to officially open the new courts at Southend Lawn Tennis Club.

Peniston, who faced Sir Andy Murray on Centre Court at Wimbledon last summer, grew up playing at Southend Lawn.

And their men’s captain James Driscoll is looking forward to seeing Peniston back on court for the club’s open day this Sunday.

“There are so many activities planned for the day including free coaching for all ages, free play for anyone wishing to turn up and give tennis a go for the first time ever or in a while, along with many other fun activities suitable for all,” said Driscoll.

“To make the day even more special, we are delighted that our most successful member, Ryan Peniston, will be taking time out of his busy schedule to join us.

“Ryan will be officially opening our new courts as part of the court opening ceremony.”

Southend Lawn spent £85,000 on their four new courts and have since also installed new floodlights.

And the club are hoping the new facilities can bolster their membership numbers.

“We are offering fantastic discounts on all membership options on Sunday,” said Driscoll.

“Exclusive to our open day, we are offering half price memberships to all new members.”

The open day gets underway at 10am and all ages are welcome to attend and try out the courts which Driscoll feels will signal an exciting future for the club.

“As a member of this club for more than 20 years, I cannot wait to see its long held potential finally fulfilled in the years to come,” said Driscoll.

“For the first time this summer, all eyes in the county will be on the club as we host LTA tournaments too.”
