SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher knows he must bolster his squad to help the Shrimpers shine this season.
The Blues boss signed goalkeeper James Hillson on non-contract terms ahead of Saturday’s National League opener against York City at Roots Hall.
But Maher is still working on bringing in more new signings.

“We need three or four bodies in to get real competition for places in the squad,” said Maher.
“You see what they’re bringing off the bench and they have three or four in the stands as well.
“We don’t have that right now but we’re working on it and we’ll build momentum as we go.
“We’re trying, it’s not always easy but everyone is working hard to make things happen.”
Maher is keen to bring in another midfielder and a striker.
