SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher praised the “professionalism and quality” of his side following tonight’s 2-0 win against Boston United.
Goals from Harry Cardwell and Gus Scott-Morriss secured the Shrimpers their first victory of the season.
And Maher was delighted to pick up all three points.
“It was good and to score early on was important,” said Maher.
“Boston are a good footballing team and they cause sides problems but right throughout the game it was professional and the quality of play was good too.”
Cardwell sent Blues on their way with a well-taken early effort.
And Maher was happy to see last season’s top scorer open his account for the new season.
“He showed good composure to slot it home which was the pleasing thing after the hard work,” said the 47-year-old.
“We said at half-time we had to keep on doing the right things and keep on pushing to get another goal.
“Leading 1-0 is dangerous and it only takes a moment for them to break or for a mistake to happen.
“But it was pleasing for Gus to score at the back post because he’s a threat but I would maybe have liked one or two more.
“Overall we’re really happy though.”
The match also saw the Shrimpers pick up their second clean sheet in succession.
And Maher was pleased with the concentration levels at the back.
“Boston kept going, they made changes and kept trying to attack,” said Maher.
“We know they never give in and it was important for the defenders to concentrate and keep a clean sheet like we did.
“We’ve taken a little bit of time to get into our stride but I have to say the pitch looked very good tonight.
“It was slick and that helps us.
“That’s important for us and these are building blocks to take into the weekend now.”
Blues, who have taken five points from their first games of the season, head to Barnet on Saturday before hosting Dagenham & Redbridge on Monday.
