SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher has praised Danny Waldron for taking his chance to shine for the Shrimpers.
Waldron made his first start of the season in Tuesday night’s 2-0 win against Boston United at Roots Hall.
And Maher was delighted with how well the striker performed.
“I was really pleased with Danny on Tuesday night and I thought him and Cards (Harry Cardwell) worked their socks off as a pair,” said the Blues boss.
“They ran the channels and didn’t give the centre-halves a minute of peace between them.
“Danny almost got the goal his performance deserved as well following a great bit of play from us so I was really pleased with how they went.”
Waldron replaced the injured Josh Walker in attack against Boston.
And Maher is pleased to see the former Rushall Olympic forward up to speed after suffering a calf problem last month.
“He had an injury during pre-season,”confirmed Maher.
“He had a calf issue which slowed him down a little bit but it’s nice to have him up to speed now.”
Waldron will now hope to start in attack against Barnet this weekend.
And Maher stressed the importance of those coming into the team to take the opportunities coming their way.
“We haven’t got the biggest of squads but we’ve got good quality within it,” said Maher.
“With the seven subs it makes a difference with the number of changes you can make during the game now too.
“When people get the opportunity you have to take it because the competition is good.
“It’s important to have that.”
Waldron worked hard on his return to the team and caught the eye of Boston boss Ian Culverhouse.
