AN injury-time effort from Tobi Tinubu secured Canvey Island a 2-1 win against Milton Keynes Irish in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.
Mason Spence fired Irish in front from the penalty spot at the Steve Taxi’s Stadium after just six minutes before Conor Hubble equalised for the Gulls just before the break.
Tinubu then completed the comeback late on and was thrilled to see the ball hit the back of the net.
“It’s always great to get on the score sheet but to score the winner in the last minute, there’s not many feelings that can top that,” said Tinubu.
“I’m just happy we were able to get the win and be in the hat for the next round.”
Canvey will discover their next opponents in this afternoon’s draw.
And Tinubu was pleased with how Brad Wellmen’s side fought back to secure the win against tough opponents.
“It was a good game and to be fair to Milton Keynes they put up a good fight,” said Tinubu.
“The early penalty they got, which personally I think was soft, sort of put us under the cosh.
“But I feel like we dealt with it and got the equaliser before half time which I thought was important.
“From there it was just about us staying calm and trusting we would get win.
“Thankfully I was able to come up good and get the goal in the last minute.”
Canvey have now triumphed in back to back games after a tough start to the campaign.
And Tinubu is keen to keep the good run going.
“We know it’s been a tricky start,” said Tinubu.
“We’ve been unlucky in a few of the games and I feel like we’ve played well in some but just wasn’t able to see games out.
“But we’ve got two wins in two now which breeds confidence around the changing room so we just need to take into the league on Saturday and I’m sure we would be able to come away with a positive result.”
Canvey host Dulwich Hamlet this weekend and Tinubu is confident a new look squad can continue to do well.
“We’ve lost some big players this year but we’ve replaced them well,” said Tinubu.
“We’ve got a good set of lads and it’s just about having the belief and confidence to show it on the pitch.
“In terms of what we can do and the hopes, to be honest the sky’s the limit. We know what we’re capable of so let’s just see how the season goes.”
Elsewhere on Saturday, Basildon United were beaten 1-0 by Biggleswade in the FA Cup.
