LIAM Nash has been encouraged by Hornchurch’s start to the National League South season.
The Urchins sit 13th in the standings with 10 points from their first seven games of the new campaign.
And Nash is pleased with how Daryl McMahon’s side have adjusted to playing at a higher level after last season's promotion.
“I think it’s been very positive,” said Nash.
“We were obviously a team that was going to be looked at as favourites for relegation after getting promoted last season.
“But we’ve showed we’re capable already of competing in this division.
Nash scored the only goal of the game to help Hornchurch beat Farnborough on Tuesday night.
And the Rayleigh based striker felt the win was fully deserved.
“I thought we were excellent and it probably the best all round performance of the season,” said Nash.
“We showed great character to grind out the result.
“Farnborough have been in good form this season so it was important we put in a good performance and we did that.”
But, despite the strong start, Nash has noticed a step up in standard.
“It’s just about adjusting to the fine margins of the game,” said Nash.
“You can’t get away with what you could in the league below so everyone has to be fully tuned in or you’ll be punished a lot more than if you was in the Isthmian.”
However Nash is enjoying the opportunity and is keen to keep on picking up points.
“We probably warranted being in this division the last two seasons and the squad we’ve got in my opinion is too good for the league below,” said Nash.
“We want to finish as high as we can and show people we’re not here to make up the numbers.
“The belief I have in this squad and the things we’re capable of doing I wouldn’t be surprised if a few people are shocked come the end of the season with where we finish up.”
And Nash is keen to show what that could be possible with another strong showing at Worthing this weekend.
“Worthing are a very tough side,” said Nash.
“They play slick football and it’s a tough place to go.
“But like I said before if we’re all tuned in and carry on from the performances we’ve already had this season hopefully they’ll be some happy Hornchurch’s fans on their way home from the game Saturday evening.”
