THE Echo’s long-serving Southend United reporter Chris Phillips will be taking in every angle of Roots Hall in a slightly different way on Friday.
Chris combines covering the Shrimpers with a love for fundraising.
And his latest challenge will see him sitting on every single seat of Blues’ stadium to generate funds for South East and Central Essex Mind.
“I was trying to think of something a bit different and just came up with the idea during a conversation with friends,” said Chris.
“We were talking about the best views at the ground so I guess I will find out on Friday what the best one definitely is.
“It’s something a bit different and will hopefully help raise money for a cause very close to my heart.”
Chris works closely with SECE Mind and also helps to co-ordinate the mental health support group Run Free which uses football to help those suffering with any form of depression.
He has undertaken a number of fundraisers over the years including a 24-hour livestream, an 11-hour tennis marathon, plus several sponsored walks and football matches.
But Chris is still keen to do more.
“I struggle with my mental health so always like to do what I can to raise funds and awareness,” he explained.
“Southend United have their match for Mind this weekend which is a brilliant thing for the club to do, so my seats challenge ties in with that.
“I have no idea how long it will take or if I’ll even be able to move by the end of it!
“The capacity has changed quite a bit over the years but there must be around 11,500 seats. I just have to finish before the game starts otherwise it could get a bit awkward having to ask everyone to move!”
Should Chris reach his £5,000 target then it will take him to £150,000 raised for charity in total.
But he stressed it was not all about money.
“When it comes to mental health, awareness is really important,” said Chris.
“When you’re the one struggling you can feel like it’s just you feeling that way and that no-one will understand or care so it’s important to try and make people realise that’s not true.”
Chris hopes to be joined by famous faces and friends during his challenge and can be sponsored online here.
