SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher believes it would be dangerous to assume the Shrimpers have turned a corner in their season.
Blues head to Aldershot Town on Wednesday night having recorded back to back wins for the first time this season.
But Maher is taking nothing for granted.
“I think that’s a dangerous assumption to make,” said Maher when asked if his team were back on track.
“We’re pleased in terms of a couple of results we’ve got but we always knew we were a bit behind.
“In an ideal world you want your new players in during pre-season so they can work and learn how you work too.
“But injuries, players leaving and players coming in a bit later meant we knew it would take time. “ The Shrimpers have now triumphed 1-0 away from home in their last two matches.
But Maher believes there is still plenty to improve on.
“There’s still work to do and we’ve got to keep on picking up points,” said the Blues boss.
“Hopefully players have settled into the building a bit more now, got to know us and we’ve got to know them too.
“We’re still finding out about people and how they play.
“It takes time but you can’t underestimate the impact of the injuries we’ve had.
“ The likes of Cav Miley, Danny Waldron, Josh Walker and Oli Coker have all been out.
“That’s all contributed to what has perhaps been a slower start but we will get there and we will get stronger.”
The Shrimpers are currently 15th in the standings and face an unusual schedule this week, playing Wednesday and Saturday.
“You play Saturday, Tuesday normally and there’s a one day lead in which you can’t do too much work in,” said Maher.
“It’s slightly different this week and it will affect Saturday possibly.
“You’ve got to look at the team selection possibly for what it looks like going forward but the focus is on tonight at this stage.
“We’ll deal with the weekend when it comes.”
But Maher is eager to keep the good run going.
“Standards have got to be high and they’ve set them the last couple of games,” said Maher.
“Are they all going to go that way? Probably not but we’ve got to aim to keep on doing the right things and get the basics right.
“Winning breeds confidence and hopefully the lads are in a good place going into what is notoriously a tough game.
“It’s been difficult every time we’ve gone there.”
