JIMMY Wallace is confident Canvey Island are starting to become more consistent - despite Saturday’s defeat to Horsham.

The Gulls were beaten 2-0 in the first round of the FA Trophy at the Steve Taxi’s Stadium.

But, having lost just once in the previous five games, Wallace still feels Canvey’s season is moving in the right direction.

“We are definitely starting to see more consistency as the season has gone on,” said Wallace.

“We have always been in every game but unfortunately some minor moments have let us down sometimes.

“We are learning from them though and know the standards we have set for ourselves.”

Canvey are currently 13th in the Isthmian Premier Division standings with 13 points from their first 11 games.

And Wallace is disappointed not to be higher.

“The season so far has been a bit of a frustrating one,” said Wallace.

“We know how good we can be but sometimes we are just not performing at those levels we know we can at times.

“Saturday was frustrating as we were definitely in the game even without performing to our best.

“Little moments just ended up costing us which is gutting as a good cup run can do wonders for the team.

“But we’ll focus on the league now.”

Canvey resume their campaign at 17th placed Cheshunt on Tuesday night.

And it is a match Wallace cannot wait to feature in.

“Tomorrow is definitely an exciting one as it’s my previous club and will be a tough game under the lights,” said the defender.

“But we know how good we can be and the standards we have set ourselves every week so we will be confident to go there, give our all and get the three points.”

However Wallace’s hopes do not end there.

“Of course everyone’s ambition before the start of the season is to go and get promoted and aim for the play offs,” said Wallace.

“There’s no easy game in this league but we have a great squad and loads of potential.

“If we just focus on getting that consistency as a squad week in week out and taking it game by game we can see where that takes us.”
