SOUTHEND United wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss is not concerned by the Shrimpers’ recent record from the penalty spot.

Scott-Morriss’ winner against Sutton United on Tuesday night came after he fired home the rebound from a saved Harry Cardwell penalty meaning Blues have now missed their last three spot-kicks.

But Scott-Morriss is confident it will not become a long-term issue.

“We got in a penalty shoot-out in the biggest game of our season at the time last season and looked so comfortable in it,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It’s one of those things.

“I’ve had a go and missed, Cards (Harry Cardwell) has a had a go but we’re all confident taking them - we just haven’t put it in the back of the net.

“Obviously Bridgey (Jack Bridge) is the penalty taker but we can’t overthink it and I’m sure whoever takes it next will put it away.”

Bridge saw his penalty saved against Boston United back in September but Andrew Dallas was on hand to fire home the rebound.

Scott-Morriss’ miss came during a 3-0 win against Altrincham in October before Cardwell saw his effort saved by Jack Sims last time out.

The failure to finish from 12 yards has therefore yet to cost Blues points.

And Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher is not overthinking the issue.

“‘Cards’ took control of it on Tuesday which is no problem,” said Maher

“Fair play to Gus for following up but it’s nice to be getting penalties again.

“We went so long without one so I’ll take that.”

Charley Kendall and Scott-Morriss also missed penalties in pre-season for the Shrimpers.

But Joe Gubbins - who scored in last season’s shoot out success at Forest Green Rovers - is also confident the problem will soon be resolved.

“It went in on Tuesday night so it doesn’t matter too much,” said Gubbins.

“I’d always take one if I’m needed to but as long as the ball ends up in the back of the net I’m sure none of us mind how it happened

“I’m sure whoever steps up will be confident of scoring.”
