WHITE Ensign are reaping the rewards of linking up with Southend United this season.

The Essex Senior League side have taken four Shrimpers youngsters on loan during the campaign.

And Ensign boss Ross Mernick believes it is hugely beneficial for both parties.

“They’re brilliant,” said Mernick.

“They’ve come to us to get experience of men’s football.

“Technically they’re all very good, it’s just about getting that exposure to men’s football which they’re getting.

“They all seem to be enjoying it here which helps.”

Blues’ George Howard, Harry Day, Olly Hyams and Emmanuel Onuh have all lined up for Ensign this season.

And Mernick is pleased to be working closely with the Shrimpers.

“Olly scored again last week and it’s good to have a partnership with such a massive club,” said Mernick.

“Hopefully we can keep using that.

“If these boys move on and outgrow our club then we get some more boys in and we can keep on replicating it.

“It’s good.”

Blues youngsters did not feature for Ensign against table-topping Frenford on Wednesday night due to their involvement in the FA Youth Cup against AFC Wimbledon at Roots Hall.

Ensign fought hard before falling to a 2-0 defeat.

But Mernick took real encouragement from the performance.

“It was a strange feeling to lose a game 2-0 but to be happy with the performance,” said Mernick.

“We were the better team for large parts of the game and created enough chances to win three games.

“We have to be more clinical in front of goal but I’m very proud of the boys against a good side.”

Ensign now sit 11th in the table but turn their attentions towards the FA Vase again this weekend.

Mernick’s side host Wormley Rovers in the second round of the competition this weekend.

And the Ensign boss cannot wait for kick-off.

“It’s the first year I’ve managed in the FA Vase and it’s such a massive competition,” said Mernick.

“White Ensign have a good record in it historically so, it’s important to try and keep that going

“Great Wakering got to the final a couple of years ago and showed what can be done but we have to say focused.

“All we’re thinking about is Saturday’s game and it’s one we’re looking forward to.”
