THERE has been considerable activity at Thorpe Hall in the past week but, due to the combination of hard frosts and torrential rain, the course has been partially or fully closed most of the time.

As a result, there has been more than the usual concentration on the ladies, the cadets and men’s AGMs, which were highlighted by the election of the new captains.

In the men’s case it also reveals to the members, for the first time, the identity of the new vice-captain, who will be captain in 2010.

Lucille Palmer-Moth drove-in impressively as the new ladies’ captain dressed, along with her committee, in the style of the 1920s.

She was accompanied by an excellent brass quartet, which continued to play throughout the buffet reception, and an attentive husband, dressed as a 20s caddy.

At the men’s annual meeting, captain Peter McCarthy handed over the reins to his vice-captain Jon Neal, one of the club’s best golfers and a long time member of the Thornton Cup team.

He then revealed that his vice- captain was the very popular Roberto Bonora, known more for his ownership of restaurants but also a sound golfer and an excellent choice. Over a shortened course, the men managed to complete the AGM Supper four ball better ball competition and it was won by the two latest past captains, Graham Easton and Peter Mc Carthy, with 20 points.

Runners-up were Brian Haken and Malcolm Price with 19.

The new cadet captain, Spencer Wells, a scratch golfer and another popular choice, having just been elected at the AGM, sent his inaugural drive over 250 yards down the fairway, applauded by members of his family, senior club members and fellow cadets.

At the men’s drive-in, probably the wettest in memory, it was a case of “beam me up Scotty” as Neal revealed that his nickname of Kirky grew from his love of anything to do with Star Trek A space module arrived, loaded with an appropriately dressed crew of members, friends and just recognisable Kindred Club captains.

He was escorted to the tee and in front of a big crowd launched his drive into space.

Everyone returned to the clubhouse for drinks, canapes and lunch.
