Southend Wheelers held their annual awards presentation at the Hollywood Restaurant, Thundersley, with David Bryant the star rider.

More than 80 members and friends of the club looked on as club patron Hazel Parsons presented the prizes.

Bryant won the senior time trials championship, best all rounder, handicap championship, Sunday scratch and handicap leagues, senior evening time trial league and several individual trophies.

Keith Dalton, runner up to Bryant in the senior time trials, won the veteran time trial championship and Sunday veteran time trial league.

Jennifer Patience won the ladies’ evening league trophy and an award for the fastest ladies’ 10 miles (27 mins 45 secs) in 2008.

She was runner up in the veteran evening time trial league.

George Pearl took the junior road race championship and evening time trial league awards, while Simon Alexander received the juvenile cyclo cross cup and was awarded the Windsor Cup for the most improved rider. He also recorded the fastest junior 10 miles time (26 mins 35 secs) in 2008.

The Kane family: mother Julie, dad James, son Matthew and daughter Hannah, all received awards with 11-year-old Hannah receiving the ladies’ cyclo cross cup. She is a rider to look out for in the future.

Veteran competitor Michael Hennessy won the veteran evening time trial league and also the 85th anniversary time trial award.

Ian McKenzie, riding a tricycle, took the 12 hour cup, covering 182 miles, and the Jack Ivory Cup for the most outstanding rider in open events following his excellent performances in the Tricycle World Championships, held in Belgium during June.

The highly contested club road race championship held at the Ford test track, Dunton, was won by Peter Humphreys, who also took the veteran road race cup.

Other awards on the evening went to Roy Godbeer, still racing competitively at 79, who won the category H in the veterans road race championship; Phil Holloway, senior road race cup, the Ian Henley Cup for the best performance in Essex road race league and the veterans road race championship category A.

Numerous other podium placed riders included, Arthur Knowler, Christine Hutson, Kevin Harwood and Mark Dennis, who took the Fat Tyre Trophy for the fastest 10 miles time trial riding a mountain bike. e Ted Parsons rose bowl, presented annually for services to the club, was awarded to Becky Pearl.
