BEN Green insists his Southend side must win at Waterloo today to keep alive their survival hopes.

The Seasiders have shown signs of encouragement in recent weeks but have now suffered eight successive defeats.

And Green knows that record must end this weekend if Southend are to stay in National Two for another season.

“If we are serious about avoiding relegation this season then these are the types of games we have to win,” said Green, whose side are currently 18 points from safety.

“It’s looking like four teams are going down at the moment but we still have to play the sides in and around us so we do have a chance.

“Waterloo are the only team below us at the moment so we need to beat them and then hopefully build on that to stay up, which we all still believe we can do.”

However, Southend’s hopes of avoiding the drop have been hit by another injury to key to full-back Andrew Frost.

Last season’s top points scorer has now had surgery on a shoulder problem and looks likely to be out of action for up to a month.

Openside flanker Richard Gill is also struggling with flu as the Seasiders look to complete a double over their lowly hosts.

Southend beat Waterloo at Warners Bridge 64-26 back in October but have not won since that triumph.

And Green is urging his troops to stay relaxed for the rematch.

“We have got to stop worrying about our league position because that’s crippling us in many ways,” he stressed.

“We need to get rid of that fear factor and enjoy playing our rugby.

“That’s the most important thing and if we can do that then I think the results will start to come.

“Our performances have been improving but it’s results we need now.”
