THERE was a tense match in the Southend Association mixed premier division between Westcliff and FitzWimarc first teams.

Marie Baker with Neil Raven got away side Fitz off to a good start and Angela McDaniell with Martin Everitt extended this.

Ben Barber and Julie Gowen pulled a rubber back but Baker and Ravenl then made the score 1-3 with a close rubber.

Barber and Gowen, together with Sarah Atkins and Mark King, brought the score back to 3-3. Westcliff edged ahead 4-3 before Fitzwimarc levelled.

The deciding rubber started with Lorraine Norris and Lee Scott winning 27-25 in the first game and 21-17 in the second for a final 5-4 score to Westcliff.

FitzWimarc were not in the running though when they played St Aidans-Leigh in the same division. The score this time was 9-0.

In mixed division two, the FitzWimarc second team were more successful away to Eastwood seconds. Donna Venables and M Vardy gained maximum points in their 6-3 win.

The mixed division three clash bewteen Hawkwell and Greensward seconds ended 7-2 to the away team. Susan Mills and Heath Aldridge got the two points for Hawkwell.

Julie Garnett and Alan Maynard won all three of their rubbers for Greensward.

Another close match was the ladies’ premier clash between Eastwood at home to their FitzWimarc.

The final rubber between Lorene and Laura Roberts against Angela McDaniell and Dawn Terry ended with the away pair winning 19-21, 19-21.

Belle Vue hosted Greensward first in ladies’ division one, the home side winning 4-2. Barbara Childs was the only lady to win all her three rubbers.

In the ladies’ division two the Fitz-Wimarc third team of Tracey Hamil-ton, Julie Garnett, Barbara Kirkby and Jane Moring beat Belle Vue II 6-0.

Another one-sided match was the men’s divison two fixture where again FitzWimarc won 9-0 at home to Chase II.

In the Veterans’ League, the premier divison fixture between FitzWimarc 1first and Eastwood first ended 3-3.

Christina Scott and Adrian Watling won the final rubber to draw the match.

In the veterans division one, St Aidans-Leigh were 5-1 winners over Greensward seconds. Mandie Bowell and Roger Worster both won all three of their rubbers.
