TED Swift was flying high in Rochford Hundred’s popular weekly midweek Stableford competition to qualify for the Scott Spencer Trophy final.

Swift bagged five pars and, appropriately, three birdies in his 41 points and saw his handicap cut by one to 13.

But he only just edged out Josh Dutnall on countback. Dutnall, who plays off five, notched nine pars plus an eagle and three birdies.

Third place on 40 was also decided on a better back nine, with Bob Lough seeing off the challenge from Paul Francis.

Rochford held their qualifier for the Kindred Club Shield which will be held on their course on July 19.

Victory in the greensome competition went to Julian Barrett and John Hodges with 42 Stableford points, one better than Lee Winsor and Dave Pepper.

Paul Kirkland and club captain Richard Hayes also went through on 40, with Trevor Collins and competitions’ chairman Ivor Finer also making the team with 39.

Andy Gilling and Steve Bradley are reserves.

Rochford cadets got back on the right track with a bang in their Essex Youth Shield clash against Benfleet rivals Boyce Hill.

The youngsters struggled to overcome Garon Park 3-2 last week but had a thumping 5-0 victory over Boyce on Sunday.

Jay Beisser, Ben Franklin and Craig Loxton all had comfortable 4 and 3 wins over Charlie Clare, Tom O’Brien and Oliver Wagstaff respectively.

Tom Owen got home 2 and 1 against Adam Soilleux and Luke Fraser just squeezed in 1 up over Tom Wilson.

Rochford’s next Shield date is at home against Lord’s on June 7.

There were some red hot scores when Rochford Ladies held their spring meeting, with Susan Myall taking the top prize with 41 points.

Runner-up Karen Playle pipped Jo Rumsey when they both finished with 38.

An afternoon nine-hole team competition saw victory on the front nine go to Denise Stone, Lesley Trenaman, Chris Fox and Pat Lowndes, with back nine honours collected by lady captain Sue Proctor, Chris Woods, Janice Hazledine and Maria Williams.
