THERE was a nail-biting climax in the Norman Plum County Match when Basildon played against Boyce Hill. The competition sees teams of six pairs playing four-ball better ball, with three duos on the home course and three away.
On the home course the team of Bill Newson and Paul Entwistle, Vic Newman and Terry Spinks, plus Ken and Ron Brace won by 12 points.
Meanwhile, on the away course, the team of Alan Cable and Jim Carr, John Wilson and Derek Entwistle plus Graham Crimmins and George Eaton lost by 12 points. With the match standing equal the winning team was decided by comparing the combined Stableford scores of both away teams. These stood at 103 to Boyce Hill and 104 to Basildon, with the new towners finally taking the match by just one point. The team now progress to the third round.
Steve Watson and Glen David played great golf in the Ken McKay bogey club competition when both finished on plus six. Watson took the honours on countback.
Eric Sach was hot on their heels in third spot on plus five.
