JOHNNY Herd wants to prove he is ready for a regular role in the Southend United side tonight.

With John White having returned to Colchester United on the completion of his month long loan deal, Herd looks set to start against Leyton Orient at Roots Hall.

And the 19-year-old left-back is desperate to make the most of his opportunity.

“Hopefully I will get the chance to play tonight and I can take it to make a claim for a regular place in the team,” said Herd, a product of the club’s youth system.

“The squad has changed a bit since our last game with a few players leaving but that could give a few others a chance to play and we are determined to get a good result.”

Herd made 11 appearances for Blues last season but has yet to feature during the current campaign.

That has left him feeling frustrated but he has also tried to remain upbeat despite not being involved on a matchday.

“Last year when I wasn’t involved it really affected me and I didn’t want that to happen this time,” said Herd.

“So as well as still working hard in training to stay fit I have also tried to keep a smile on my face at all times.

“I have been patient in waiting for an opportunity to play and, touch wood, it will be against Orient.”

Herd also hopes he will be able to help Blues bag their first league win of the season.

Steve Tilson’s side had been held to four draws before losing at Swindon Town last weekend and the young defender wants to return to action with a win.

“The performances that I have seen have been good but it’s results that matter at the end of the day,” said Herd.

“We want a victory now and it would be brilliant to get that against Orient.

“I know there is a bit of a rivalry between the teams, which is maybe more for the fans than the players, but it would still be a great time to get our first league win.”

Blues head into this evening’s game without Jean-Francois Christophe who is suspended.

He is likely to be replaced by Damian Scannell, while Francis Laurent is in line to start up front alongside Lee Barnard.

Goalkeeper Ian Joyce is again doubtful with a hip problem.
