Canvey Island clinched promotion with a 40-9 win over Upminster.

The Islanders, who have won 16 of their 21 league games this season, are now assured second place and will be playing in London 2NE next season.

They came out firing on all cylinders against Upminster with an early try from Ben Chandler.

The opposition’s big forwards led to Upminster briefly pulling ahead, but Canvey hit back with a try from Dave Dennis (converted by fly half Jay Bedford).

Moments later, flanker Matt Lay made a break and then passed to winger Tom Dulieu to score an unconverted try.

From another ruck, scrum half Brett Smith then popped the ball to Matt Lay and, after some good interplay between backs and forwards, hooker Darren Smith went over for a try.

Upminster replied with a penalty but Canvey came back right from the start of the second period when Bedford scored a penalty.

Canvey were now and looked dangerous every time they got the ball.

From a line-out the ball was fed down the line to winger Steve Hassan to go over for a try converted by Bedford.

With time running out Canvey finished in style with another try from full-back Chandler to seal the game and leave club spokesman Richard Smith delighted.

“This win sealed our promotion which is great but we will need to perform every game like this next season now,” said Smith.

Fourth placed Basildon also triumphed as they won 48-12 at Lowestoft and Yarmouth.

Lowestoft opened the scoring within three minutes but this just stung Basildon into action and there were tries for stand in winger Barry Watkins, Lee Randall and second team skipper Scot Weeks.

After half time Basildon went into overdrive and dazzled the large home crowd with a series of slick handling moves finished off with clinical precision.

There were tries for flanker Joe Green, centre Pete Smith, Weeks got his second, but man of the match winger Danny Rowley scored three times and was impressive in every thing he did.

Skipper Nick Howard struck three conversions before going off injured then Lee Randall took over and kicked four.

South Woodham Ferrers remain fifth after winning 48-12 at Dagenham but bottom of the league Billericay were beaten 20-8 at West Norfolk.
