ESSEX Pirates are celebrating their first back-to-back wins of the British Basketball League season.

The Southend-based side saw off Guildford Heat 93-84 on Saturday.

And they then followed that up with a 73-64 triumph at London Capital to leave head coach Tim Lewis incredibly satisfied.

“It’s brilliant that we have been able to win two games in a row for the first time,” said Lewis.

“We always thought we would improve as the season progressed and that’s how it’s proved.

“We’ve won three games this month now and are perhaps slightly unlucky not to have won four in a row because we only just lost a very close game at MK Lions.”

Pirates led from the off against Heat during a dominant display at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre.

They were 24-22 in front at the end of the first quarter and 54-41 ahead at half-time.

That became 70-58 after the third quarter before Pirates stayed ahead during the final 10 minutes.

Sam Toluwase top-scored for Lewis’ team with 22 points, while Taner Adu and Marcus Knight both added 14.

But the victory was less straight forward for Pirates against Capital.

They were 22-10 down after the first quarter and still trailed 38-27 at half-time.

The third period proves pivotal as Pirates, who were roared on by a strong contingent of travelling supporters, went 52-49 ahead and they then extended their advantage further late on to make sure of a third victory in four games.

“We had to dig deep to get the win, especially after making a slow start,” said Lewis.

“Maybe the players had heavy legs after also playing the night before, but they did well to recover and win the game.

“Earlier on in the season that wouldn’t have happened, but we’ve been training hard all year and are beginning to see the results now.

“It’s just a shame the season is coming to an end,” the Pirates’ coach added.

Adu top-scored for Pirates against Capital with 21 points, with Knight and Walid Mumuni both chipping in with 14.

Pirates are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Worcester Wolves, tip-off 7.30pm.
