ANDY Johnson didn’t attempt to mask his appearance when he arrived to drive in as the new captain of Ballards Gore dressed as Zorro.

The past captains toasted him with the traditional glass of port on the patio.

Fellow members helped Johnson celebrate his drive-in and the day was a great success with competitions, such as “guess the captains’ attire” and “how long the captains first shot would be”, raising over £600 on the day for the captain’s chosen charity The Macmillan Cancer Trust.

There were also prizes up for golfers with competitions on the back and front nine.

Rick Chadwick won the front nine with Paul Skinner in second place and Jill Hawkins first lady.

The back nine was won by Keith Layen with Rod Smith in second place and Pat Rogers first lady. With the clubhouse now fully open, the club and members wished Johnson every success for the coming year.

Also at the weekend the members competed for the silver award, a pairs competition played off three-quarters handicap. Some great golf was played and some great scores were returned. Keith and Dean Layen won with 44 points. Geoff and Paul Clarke came second with 42.
