TOMMY Widdrington’s departure from Southend United was purely down to footballing reasons.

The former Salisbury City boss parted company with Blues on Wednesday and mystery initially surrounded his departure.

The club issued only a short statement and that had led to speculation from supporters that the decision may have been financially motivated.

But the Echo now understands that it was a footballing decision.

Manager Paul Sturrock has remained tight lipped and was reluctant to speak about Widdrington’s successor at yesterday’s press conference.

“At the moment we’re focused on the games we have coming up,” said the Scotsman.

“Christmas is always a busy time of year for us and once that’s out of the way we will take stock of the situation.”

That means experienced defender Graham Coughlan will again be working alongside Sturrock during the festive period.

He stood alongside the Blues boss in the dug-out at Cheltenham Town on Tuesday evening and also took the warm up at Whaddon Road.

That was the first game without Widdrington and club captain Craig Easton hopes the 39-year-old can bounce back from leaving Blues.

“Tommy gave his all when he was here and we wish him all the best for the future,” said Easton.
