ESSEX Pirates’ new boy Ronnie Baker may be 41-years-old but he is confident of still showing the league’s young guns how it should be done.

Baker has won more than 100 caps for England during an illustrious career which has seen him win every trophy available in the British game.

But he is now delighted to be back in the BBL with the Southend based Pirates and is determined to lead by example.

“I love it and I’m still in tip top shape so I don’t really care how old I am or how old the people I’m playing against are either,” said Baker.

“I’m a fitness freak and work out for three to four hours every day so I will play hard against whoever I’m up against.

“There are a lot of young guys here at the Pirates so it’s my aim to help them and be professional both on and off the court to guide them.”

Baker had not been playing for the first half of the season, as he instead opted to concentrate on a blossoming coaching career.

However he showed no signs of rustiness against Guildford Heat on Sunday as he top scored with 17 points in his new side’s 84-63 defeat.

“I was winded early on when I first came on the court but I got over that and I enjoyed it out there,” said Baker.

“Unfortunately we just let them have too many opportunities to score because we weren’t getting the rebounds.

“But the spirit is still high in the team and we are going to get a win soon.

“Once that happens then I’m sure there will be more to follow.”

Baker began his career with the Brixton Topcats in the EBL in 1985 before stepping up in to the BBL with Crsytal Palace.

He has also played for Worthing Bears, London Leopards, London Towers, Guildford Kings, Manchester Giants, Brighton Bears and MK Lions in a career that spans more than 20 years.

Baker has also won the BBL Cup, League, Trophy and play-offs and Pirates coach Tim Lewis is pleased to have him on board.

“Ronnie is a veteran and will add experience to the team,” said Lewis.

“He is one of England’s most capped players and will be good for the young players we have here.

“He will definitely be a useful addition to our squad.”

Pirates are also still seeking their first win of the season after suffering two more defeats over the weekend.

They were beaten 82-42 at Sheffield Sharks on Friday night before being seen off by the Heat.

Sunday’s reverse will also be shown in its entirety on Sky Sports Three tonight, starting at 8pm.
