ADAM Barrett is convinced his former Southend United team-mate Dougie Freedman can help Crystal Palace climb up the Championship table.

And the Benfleet-based centre-back is desperate to also play a prominent part in transforming the Eagles’ fortunes.

Freedman, who made 41 appearances for Blues before returning to Selhurst Park in March 2010, has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to become the new Palace boss.

The South London side are currently in the relegation zone but Barrett is looking forward to working with Freedman is a bid to secure survival.

“I’m really pleased that Dougie has been given the job because he was a major reason why I came here in the first place,” said Barrett, 31.

“He knows the club inside out and is very well respected here so I’m sure he will do well.

“It’s also a fresh start for everyone, including myself, and hopefully I can start to get a few more games now because it has been a frustrating six months so far for me at Crystal Palace.”

Under former boss George Burley, Barrett — who played 289 times for Southend during a six-year spell at Roots Hall — struggled to establish himself in the starting line up.

The defender has made only six starts for the Eagles this term and is now desperate for further opportunities in the first team.
