A SALESMAN looking to shift a few pounds is trying his hand at every event scheduled for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Boris Wozstock, 33, from Leigh, ticked off his latest must-do sport when he took part in a lung-bursting training session with the Basildon Water Polo Club at gloucester Park on Sunday.

The Pitsea-born sales rep started his “Everyman Olympian” challenge in February last year and has already had a go at canoeing, rowing, badminton, weight-lifting, tennis, cycling, table tennis, swimming and football — concentrating on one sport every month.

He kicked off with a marathon, and has also completed a decathlon after getting tips from ex-hurdler Kriss Akabusi, former javelin world-record holder Steve Backley, and former Canvey decathlete, Dean Macey.

But he still has many disciplines to go including fencing, taekwondo, gymnastics, triathlon, handball, shooting and the equestrian events.

He said: “My girlfriend knows someone with horses, so I am hoping they can help out with the equestrian stuff.

“And I am going to need a gun licence before I can do the shooting event. But I’m confident I can get through it all.

“My girlfriend thinks I am mad and she’s got a point. It has become a bit of an obsession really.”

Wozstock weighed 14st 4lb when he started his challenge. He actually put weight on when he bulked up during his month of learning the clean and jerk in weightlifting, where he improved his lift from 40kg to 67.5kg. But he is currently tipping the scales at 13st 10lb.

He is hoping to end his water polo month by joining Team GB at an event in Liverpool, and Basildon Water Polo Club coach Dave Warriner said: “He had a bit of cramp after 15 minutes with us, so he is going to need to train hard.

“But fair play to him for giving it all a go — he has certainly got a lot of enthusiasm.”
