DAVID Crown is backing Neil Harris to be a real hit at Roots Hall.

Crown, who bagged 69 goals in 132 games for Blues during the late 1980s, was Harris’ first goalscoring hero — along with Liverpool legend Ian Rush.

And Crown is now looking forward to seeing Harris in action for Blues.

“I think it’s a great signing because Neil has a fantastic goalscoring record,” said Crown.

“He will immediately be popular with the punters because he’s a local lad and everyone you speak to will tell you he’s a quality person too.

“On top of all that he obviously has an excellent eye for talent if I was his favourite Southend player — but I think it’s the first and only time I’ll ever be mentioned alongside Ian Rush!”

Crown believes Harris will fit in well to the Southend side and is certain he has the battling qualities needed to succeed at League Two level.

“Neil fought back from testicular cancer to still play professionally and that says a lot about his character,” said Crown.

“I also think he’s exactly what Southend require because, although there were plenty of positives to take from last season and Mr Sturrock did a great job, I do think there was a lack of fire-power.

“That’s not a criticism of the strikers who played because I thought they did well, especially Barry Corr.

"But a proven goalscorer was needed and Neil is certainly that."
