SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock has expressed his delight at bringing Neil Harris to Roots Hall.

The 33-year-old striker has become the Scotsman’s first signing of the summer.

And he is sure the former Millwall forward will be a big hit for Blues.

“I’m very pleased to have brought Neil to the football club,” said Sturrock.

“When you look at the league table last season you can see we needed to score more goals and Neil will certainly help with that.

“He’s an experienced goalscorer but he’s also a playmaker and I think he will fit in well.

“Neil is exactly what we need and he will want to do well too because he’s a Southend United supporter.

“He’s certainly not just come here to see out the final few years of his career.”

Harris has scored close to 150 goals since making his professional debut with Millwall back in 1998.

And Sturrock is certain the younger members of the squad will learn plenty from the Eastwood-based striker.

“He’s a good professional and will set a good example to the other players at the club,” said Sturrock.

“I was impressed when I spoke to him and although there has been a lot of hype surrounding us signing him, I think he will be able to deal with the pressure.”
