SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock is keen to keep his son Blair at the club.

The Scottish striker has so far failed to agree a new contract at Roots Hall.

But his father is keen for the forward to remain part of his plans.

“I would like Blair to stay because you need centre forwards who all offer something different,” confirmed the Blues boss.

“Sometimes different players will suit certain types of opposition or tactics you want to play and I want Blair to be available.

“He met with our chief executive Tara (Brady) yesterday and hopefully the situation can be sorted.”

If he agrees a new deal, Sturrock, who scored six goals in 48 games last season, would be challenging new signing Neil Harris, Barry Corr, Kyle Asante and Harry Crawford for a place in attack.

The out of favour Matt Paterson also still has another year left on his contract.

But Sturrock is still keen to strengthen his strike-force.

“We aren’t finished in that department yet,” he stressed.

“Even if Blair signs I would like to bring in another forward.

“That’s one of the areas we are looking at improving but it’s probably also the hardest to find because all clubs seem to be looking for strikers.”
