Basildon moved up to second in the London Two North East table with a 20-7 win at Old Streetonians.

A penalty from Charlie Baker put Basildon into an early lead which was then extended in the 16th minute with a try from scrum half JD O'Mahoney who finished out wide. But Basildon eased up and let their hosts back into the game.

They soon scored a good try from a set move with their centre running a great line before he went over untouched under the posts, to cut Basildon’s lead to 8-7.

Basildon scored the match’s best try when full back Matt Chapman fed centre Ben White who wove through the defence to score.

Second row Ryan Creasey also showed his skill with a driving run in to the heart of the home side’s defence and substitute James Meadows wormed his way over.

Canvey Island were not as successful though as a second half collapse saw them lose 42-22 at home to Ipswich.

Canvey went in front with a try from winger Tom Delieu.

The next score came when full back Steve Hassan linked up with winger Fankee Leeming who went over for a try which was converted by Damon Cooper.

Ipswich replied with a converted try but Canvey responded with Cooper dummying his way through to score, before scrum half Brett Smith also touched down to make it 22-7 to Canvey.

But they were unable to hang on to their lead and the turning point came when Cooper chased his own kick and flicking to Smith. But the pass was intercepted by the Ipswich winger who ran in to score a try which was converted.

Another converted try followed at the start of the second half before Ipswich touched down a further four times.
