MICHAEL Timlin's joy at returning from a shoulder injury was shortlived after Southend United's 1-0 defeat to Accrington Stanley.
The midfielder was unexpectedly selected in the starting line-up despite having missed most of pre-season.
But the reverse at Roots Hall meant Timlin was a frustrated a figure at the final whistle.
“I was delighted to be playing again but I'm still extremely disappointed because of the result,” said Timlin.
“I thought we deserved a point at the very least and that takes away the joy of coming back to play.
“That said I was obviously pleased to be out there, especially as Friday was only my second day of training.
“The physio wanted me to train for another week or so but I told the gaffer I felt good to go in and I just wish I could've helped us get a better result.”
Blues were unable to convert any of the chances that came their way with Timlin among those to be denied by Accrington's goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin.
And he felt Paul Sturrock's side only started to play properly after going a goal behind.
“We didn’t do the right things in the second half until they scored and that shouldn't be the case,” said Timlin.
“This year we have to put a huge demand on ourselves because last season we sneaked in the back-door when no one expected us to be there.
“This time we are expected to be up there but some people have written us off already so we have to come to the table and prove ourselves again.”
Timlin will also be able to play a part in that quest after suffering no reaction to his surprise return.
“I have maintained a good fitness and I feel fine,” said Timlin.
“I am going to make sure I recover in the right way for tomorrow's game at Oxford which will be another real test for us.”
