SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Bond was a happy man after seeing the Shrimpers beat Stevenage tonight.

Two goals from Charlie Kelman saw Blues triumph 2-1 in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

And Bond felt his side were worthy winners.

"This was a good night and a good performance and I thought we were worthy winners," said Bond.

"We should have tucked more away but it was good to get the win."

The Shrimpers came back from a goal down to triumph.

And Bond was full of praise for Kelman and his strike partner Simon Cox.

"Charlie did well and the front two didn’t stop working for us," said Bond.

"It was what we needed to be about.

"We had to match them because we knew they would be all over us and never give us a second on the ball.

"We had to match their energy levels and I thought we did that.

"The front two led the line from the front and Charlie took his goals well."
