SOUTHEND United’s youth team chief Danny Heath heaped praise on goalkeeper Callum Taylor following the Shrimpers’ 2-1 win against AFC Wimbledon.

Goals from Oli Coker and Adetayo Adedoja saw the Shrimpers fight back from a goal down to triumph.

But it was the performance of Taylor between the sticks which most impressed Heath.

“In the first half we weren’t really in the game and I have to say Callum produced the best goalkeeping performance I’ve seen at youth level for a very long time,” said Heath.

“He made some excellent saves and he kept us in the game if I’m honest.

“Credit must go to him and his performance meant we were only 1-0 down at the break when it could have been a lot worse.”

However, Blues improved after the break and were able to secure victory thanks to two fine finishes.

And Heath was pleased with how his players were able to turn things around.

“We spoke at half-time about how they still had a chance to put things right and they did just that,” said Heath.

“They showed good composure on the ball which is what we needed and it was pleasing to come back to get the win with a much improved display in the second half.”

The victory made it three wins in succession for the young Shrimpers who have also triumphed in four of their last five outings.

But Heath, whose side endured a slow start to the season, has not been surprised by the turnaround in fortune.

“I think it was only a matter of time until the performances started to get the points they deserved really,” said Heath.

“The players have worked really hard as well so they’re getting the rewards for what they’ve put in and we’ve had some good performances.”

However, Heath was also keen to stress that the good displays must continue.

“The players know they have to keep this going now,” said Heath.

“They have to keep working hard and focus on the next game which is Gillingham at home on Saturday.”
