WESTCLIFF High School for Girls have been celebrating a haul of silverware from sporting events across the county.

In netball, the schools’ Year 9 and under-16 teams were crowned borough champions after winning every game in the tournament against eight other schools from across the borough of Southend.

In the same competition, the Year 7 and 8 teams both finished in second place, narrowly missing out in the finals.

The Year 7 team continued this success with a trip to the Essex Schools Plate Netball finals in Redbridge where they faced Jo Richardson Academy. The under-19 netball team were also represented and faced Coopers School.

The school’s head of PE Ruth Wilkin said: “It was brilliant to see the youngest and the oldest players representing the school on the same day and both teams performed very well.”

The Year 7 team stormed to victory with an amazing winning score of 25-7 and the under-19 team narrowly missed out due to a final quarter injury meaning they were down to only six players for the final minutes.

Finally, the under-14 hockey team travelled to Chelmer Park to face FitzWimarc in the final of the Essex Schools Plate. The team played exceptionally well and maintained their 100 per cent clean sheet record beating FitzWimarc 2-0 to be crowned county champions.

These wins added to the schools’ success at the Borough swimming gala in which Westcliff took top spot.

Wilkin added: “It is brilliant to see all the hard work the students put in paying off. The girls deserve all of their success.”
