NEIGHBOURS who rallied round to help one of Canvey’s oldest residents during the floods were praised in the House of Commons.
Residents in Hawkesbury Road regularly check on 103-year-old Bill Monk and when his carers couldn’t get to him after the street was submerged under 20cm of water they stepped in.
Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris applauded their actions when she spoke during the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Bill.
She said: “On numerous occasions, many public- spirited individuals stepped in.
“I am thinking of people such as Neal Warren and Simon Hart who spent all afternoon unblocking sewers and road drains in Hadleigh, at their own risk, and the neighbours of Bill Monk, a 103- year-old whose carers could not reach him because of the floods.”
Mr Monk said: “I have wonderful neighbours.”
