Thugs fracture man's skull in unprovoked attack

A GROUP of thugs fractured a man's skull in an unprovoked attack.

The 20-year-old victim was on his way home from Churchill's bar in Southend when he was approached by the group of men in the early hours of Monday.

They knocked him to the floor and continued to punch and kick him.

The victim, who lives locally, managed to make his way home but was admitted to hospital on Friday when his condition worsened.

Doctors found that he had a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.

The man’s family reported the incident to police on Friday and an investigation is being carried out by officers at Southend CID.

DI Jon Burgess said: "The man was viciously attacked in the area of the old B&Q building and Connexions Office near Short Street.

"We do not have the precise time of the incident but it could have been between 1am to 3am. This seems to have been an unprovoked and particularly cowardly attack by a group of men.

"We want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who can give us more information about the incident.”

Anyone who can help should call DI Burgess or his colleagues on 101 extension 470217 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Hopefully the will get ten years a piece ALL involved. I suspect if this guy did something, it would have been very minor, like a wrong look and no need for cracking his head open.

I was actually assaulted in a similar situation in that very area, but that was about 10 years ago!

Hope he recovers quickly.

That's a scary area at the best of times. Often see drunks sitting on the steps by the bridge and I wouldn't use the subways either. I thought CCTV was all around Southend. To the young man hope you recover soon.

These scum laugh at our justice system, and we're all sick of it. A decent, honest man can't even walk home without fear of being violently accosted? It's shameful. At what point must we recognise, at long last, that simple imprisonment isn't enough?

'simple imprisonment' would be plenty enough, IF it happened... as madmax says, 10 years should be mandatory for a violent unprovoked assault, but the chances are that even if caught and prosecuted the outcome will be all too predictable...... letters of apology, character references, excuses ranging from my grandads ill, i lost my job, was drunk etc, then the pseudo intellectual ramblings of the judge to follow, ' i was minded to hand you an immediate custodial sentence, your very lucky, next......
