TEENAGERS grabbed their tool boxes for a brain-stretching day exploring the world of engineering and technology.

Ninety-six pupils from eight schools across south Essex took part in the challenge at Ford's Technical Centre, Dunton.

Pupils' mechanical and electrical engineering skills were tested to the limit as they built carts and trolleys.

The enterprising youngsters used steel, wire, string and wheels to come up with their working designs.

The event, called Boys Entering Tomorrow's Science, Engineering and Technology, event was organised to encourage children to consider engineering careers.

Among the schools taking part were the Deanes School, Thundersley, Shoeburyness High School, Castle View School, Canvey, Appleton School, Benfleet, and Cecil Jones High School, in Southend.

Mike Williamson, organiser from Setpoint Essex, which promotes science, maths and technology in schools, said: "The events are quite challenging, but they have a relaxed and fun element."
