FIREFIGHTERS staged a huge mock rescue of students from a smoke-filled laboratory to test their skills and the college's evacuation procedures.
More than 30 firefighters took part in tackling the staged gas explosion, at South East Essex College, and dealt with casualties played by students.
Marco Scarola, head of marketing and communications at the college, said: "This exercise, which has been planned over the past six months, was an amazing opportunity for us to test our evacuation procedures.
"We normally have two fire drills a year, but to practice with Essex Fire and Rescue, who were testing some new equipment, was fantastic."
Staff and students from the beauty therapy department also tested their skills by creating injuries, inclusing cuts and bruises.
Matt Furber, Southend and Rochford community commander, said: "We will take our learnings from the day back to the stations, to ensure crews remain sharp and fully briefed in dealing with major risks within the community."
