TRAINING and employment in Southend has been given a boost as building work continues on a new £27million landmark library.

Wates Construction, which is building the Forum in Elmer Square, has taken on four apprentices for the project and provided 160 hours’ work experience to youngsters.

The library, a joint project between Southend Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College, is due to open to students and the public on Monday, September 30.

Building work has been ongoing since February last year.

As well as offering training and experience for those persuing a practical career in construction, the project has helped business and management students.

One of the young people to benefit includes South Essex College student, Sarah Serrano-Bello, 18, who was invited to join Wates on site one day per week after completing a week’s work experience on the project.

Her role enables her to apply her studies for a level three BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment in a practical hands-on way. Anna-Louise Yiannakas, 21, has been working full-time on the Forum whilst studying for a businesses administration NVQ and degree in construction management.

She said: “It is fantastic to have had the opportunity to gain hands-on practical industrial experience alongside my studies. The practical knowledge that I’ve learnt along the way has really enhanced my academic studies and broadened my skills in preparation for my future career.”

The state-of-the-art public and academic library was designed to replace Southend Central Library and the Focal Point Gallery in Victoria Avenue as well as college and university teaching facilities.

Landscaping work is also be done to create outside tree-lined public spaces, gardens areas and seating.

Peter Whitmore, business director for Wates Construction, said: “It was the intention of all project partners from the outset to ensure these important building works not only deliver a state-of-the-art library and learning facility but also facilitate employment and training opportunities for local young people.

“It is a very exciting time as we approach completion of construction and I am proud to see the practical knowledge being cultivated as a result of this project and the talent and skills that have been nurtured throughout the works.”
