SOUTHEND Carnival has been hailed a success by its organisers.

Fifty three floats entered the dazzling procession, which snaked through the town, from Chalkwell Shelter to Eastern Esplanade.

Garry Lowen, one of the trustees and procession event manager, said; “I would like to say thank you to everyone who took part in the Southend Summercare Carnival and for the quality of their entries, also to the community for turning out to watch and encouraging them to get involved in years to come.

“A special thank-you also goes to the many volunteers who helped stage the event and our sponsors and supporters who made it possible.”

The floats were many and varied with the Echo entering one decked out as a newsroom from yesteryear.

It was sponsored by DPL Production Lighting in Rawreth, the lorry was provided by Steve’s Self Drive Hire, in Southend, and Mardens Signs & Designs in B e n f l e e t , S u s a n Griffiths, Kettlercise instructor, Markone Hire, in Rochford, and Balloon Decor from Studio 20 at Barleylands Craft Village, were all involved.

The Mascot was provided by Costumes with Character, in Stockport.

Southend Carnival organisers would like to hear spectators’ feedback, via its facebook or twitter sites, or www.southend-onseacarnival.org.uk

A spokeswoman said: “When we applied for funding from Southend Council this year we did request a budget to put fireworks on, as we know they are highly popular.

“However, this part of the budget was not supported, with the priority being put on the procession.

“We would love to receive feedback from those who attended so we can work in the future to bring back things like the fireworks, through other funding sources, if possible.

“We would also encourage people who would like to see such things happen to let the council know your feelings as this will also encourage it to support us with such activities in the future.”
