THE kids are doing it for themselves this weekend on Mersea.
A group of young musicians who live on the island have got together to put on their own gig this Friday.
It was the idea of 17-year-old Katy Cirne, who is studying musical technology at Colchester Institute.
She says: “About a year ago some of us appeared at a gig at the Mersea Centre and afterwards I suggested wouldn’t it to be great if we had our own gig just for teenagers.
“We approached the committee of the Mersea Island Community Association and they loved the idea and we then went and got sponsorship from the local Co-op.”
The gig will be taking place at the Mersea Centre from 7pm.
Katy says there should be about five or six acts performing at the free show, with those taking part ranging in age from 13 to 18.
At the end of the night it is hoped everyone performing on the night will join together for a massive “big group” finale.
