10,000 Basildon homes... on the green belt?

MORE than 10,000 new homes could be built in Basildon over the next 20 years, it has emerged.

Sources at Basildon Council have said its local plan, which is near completion, could controversially include building homes on green belt land.

The council is considering setting aside land for between 10,000 and 12,000 houses in the Basildon, Billericay and Wickford areas.

The Tory administration will finalise its Local Plan–which has been 10 years in the making – by March 2014.

The proposals will go out to consultation early next year.

The figure is double the council’s estimate of building 6,000 homes.

Proposals will need to be given the thumbs-up by a planning inspector.

Campaigners are worried the borough’s green belt will be concreted over.

One group that campaigns against overdevelopment in Wickford is concerned the town will eventually be joined with Rayleigh.

David Harrison, vice chairman of the Wickford Action Group, said: “There is no space left in Wickford except the green belt, so I would imagine areas in Shotgate would be in the plan. With the 800 homes in Rayleigh planned, they need to be careful not to join up the towns.”

P h i l Turner, deputy leader o f the council, said the area needed new housing.

He said: “There is nothing malicious about putting these sites forward – it is something we have got to do.

“We’re looking at 50 or 60 per cent more than the original figures, but if we don’t have any sort of development framework there would be lots of loopholes developers could exploit if they went to an appeal.

“There is a huge amount of pressure to develop in the region, but it is better the final decision lies with the local authority, not with a planning inspector with no ties to the area.”

The numbers are provisional.

Councils are asked to give plausible estimates for the amount of housing required in their boroughs over a large period of time, which must then be passed by Government planners.

The Echo understands green belt land will have to be in the firing line, due to the sheer amount of homes required in the borough.

So much for the 'Green Belt'. Seems to be an idea invented by politicians so that the local authority can sell 'Green Belt' land at a higher price to a developer because its labelled 'Green Belt'. Maybe a back hander would help get planning permission.
I can see why we need to give MPs an 11% pay rise we certainly need a better class of politician than we have now.

Labour had 12 years in power and all but ruined this country.... fact. We were on the brink of bankruptcy.... fact. Anyone who pines for their return to power is a fool.
This lot are doing a good job of pulling us out of the S*** but you cannot please everyone all of the time, especially the work shy benefit society that flourished under Labour. Gimme, gimme, gimme.
This plan is a great plan to raise much needed revenue, create jobs and much needed housing for the next two decades.
Well done Basildon Council.

The proposals will go out to consultation early next year.

Well, there are savings to be made by scrapping the consultation. No representations will be listened to, and the original plan that they are currently preparing will be used, so just publish it and get on with it. The local residents will have no say in the matter, so why waste time and money consulting them.

All these houses and yet nobody can tell me where the politicians are going to magically produce roads to cope with all the extra traffic. So South Essex is going to be one great slab of concrete, an enormous part of London. Anyone thought about the quality of life? No money comes first. These houses are not for English people - they are going to be for the millions of immigrants already here and more to come. God help our Grandchildren.

And you idiots vote Tory, Labour and Liberal and continue the EU domination of our lands. Don't complain about your greenbelt, waiting longer on NHS lists and your kids education because the vast majority of you can't see the bigger picture that the EU is creating. Massive third world Euro cities. A Yugoslavia of different ghettos and cultures. God bless the EU.
