POLICE cordoned off a section of a busy Rochford road last night after electricity cables caught light.

Emergency services were called to Ashingdon Road at about 5.45pm after 142 customers lost power.

Officers worked quickly to make the area safe and set up an exclusion zone around the affected telegraph pole.

A large section of road between Roche Avenue, Dalys Road and Somerset Avenue, off Ashingdon Road, was closed.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which started at 5.45pm, then engineers from UK Power Networks moved in to fix the fault.

Is there no plan to bury these cables in the road, having them strung from poles is a bit old hat?

Not sure that the electricity cable considered this before self combusting... How thoughtless of it and how thoughtless of the police to close the road. What a comment.

My thoughts are for other people and how they got home, its a pity that more myopic people thought about somebody else instead of themselves.

We drove down Dalys Road just after it happened to turn left into Ashingdon Road and the car in front tore into the flimsy paper barrier, as they didnt see it, No lights and there should have been a police card there or at least a policeman on duty.

I got caught in this last night, the traffic in Rochford could have been diverted away from the Ashingdon Road at the mini roundabout by the station.
There was a Police car at the incident, but further back into town would have been of better use.
Important thing is no one was hurt and if a few were delayed getting home and power was restored quickly, then no overall problem.
