New Flybe route from Southend to Maastricht

First published in News

FLIGHTS from Southend to Maastricht in the Netherlands will start this summer, the Echo can reveal.

Airline Flybe will today unveil flights from Southend Airport to Maastricht Aachen Airport, starting in July.

The new destination, the airport’s 15th, is a replacement for Cologne, which Flybe dropped earlier this month, after competitor Ryanair announced it would fly to the German city from Stansted.

Flybe intends to carry up to 25,000 passengers in the first year of the route’s operation, rising to 80,000 passengers in three years.

Tickets for the route, which will operate every day except Saturday from July 10, will go on sale today.

Stobart Air, which has invested more than £120million in the airport since buying it in 2008, hopes to double the number of passengers using it, to more than two million in two years.

the only thing thats lets Southend airport down is the state of the trains on the Southend Victoria to Liverpool Street line, about time they upgraded them to ones like on the Stansted Express. also arriva need to upgrade their buses on services 7 and 8 that serve the airport.

Very true about the trains - they are really tatty. The trouble is that Greater Anglia only seem to care about the "Mainline" passengers travelling out to Colchester/Ipswich / Norwich - the Southend Vic line has always been the poor relation. It is about time they provided a proper late night service from - and early morning service to - Southend Airport as well.

The airport is great for the area.
But please stop driving business users away - Edinburgh service vanishing, new Flybe domestic routes go to London City.
Lot of businesses want to use the airport to save domestic travel time so much more convenient and better than the alternatives including City - so come on

The five year agreement will see Stobart Air operate two ATR 72-600s for Flybe from June 5,

i agree. Perhaps the echo could also investigate multiple user log-in accounts as well.

I bet my left leg that a particular local PR company (that shall remain nameless) is responsible for the painfully pro airport, PR-Esque comments on this and other echo threads.

You're a moron if you think Southend is anything to do with that. People can go wherever the hell they want on holiday - it's 2014. You can't put barbed wire around the country, close the airports and blockade the ports when the school holidays arrive and persuade everyone to go to Brighton!

There is no need to be abusive. Of course Southend is a part of it, people fly out from Southend to foreign countries where they spend their money, just like other airports. The net result is that money leaves the country.
You are quite right that people can go where they like. Foreigners can go where they like too. We should be encouraging them to come here for their holidays, to balance out those brits who choose to go abroad.
