A NEW £6million casino is expected to bring jobs, glitz and glamour to Southend seafront when it opens in September.

The 24-hour Grosvenor Casino is due to open below the Park Inn Palace Hotel on September 18.

Traders have welcomed the fact it will bring much-needed investment to the seafront and create more than 100 jobs Tom Docherty, the casino’s general manager, said: “Southend is a popular seaside town with a long-established association with entertainment and innovation, making it ideal.

“We’re confident our new casino will attract new and existing gamers into Southend, with its state-of-the-art facilities, and further increase interest in the area as a key tourist destination.

“It will be a stylish new venue, where you can enjoy the thrill of gaming and live sports around the clock, and also support employment in the area.”

He added the casino would be “a new and exciting venue, perfect for serious gamers or those just looking for a fun, alternative night out.”

It will have a 100-seat poker room available for private functions and tuition, plus slot machines, electronic gaming and a VIP room for high-stakes games.

It will also have a restaurant and bar and a separate sports lounge with betting terminals, showing Premier League football, rugby, cricket, boxing and motor racing.

Mr Docherty added: “We’re hugely excited about our sports lounge and sports betting facilities, as this will be only the second Grosvenor Casino in the UK to have such facilities.”

Paul Thompson, chairman of Southend Seafront Traders’ Association, said he hoped the appeal of the casino would also be boosted by a new multiplex cinema on the Seaway Car Park.

He added: “It will be good. It’s more investment in the seafront and investment in Southend, which is good news.

“Once we get it going, and if the cinema gets up and running, things will be looking good for Southend seafront again.

“It will give people staying in the hotels something to do in the evenings.

"Everything is on the up.”

Ha Ha!! - that comment gave me a laugh on a Monday morning. Sad but true!!

Seriously though - I have some doubts as to whether Southend has enough gamblers - be it poker, roulette , slots , or bingo , to make it viable to have 3 large casinos in such a short space on the seafront. Genting and this new one will be 24/7 and Rendezvous is open till 5A.M. daily. Will they all survive and prosper?

Yes the Glitz and Glamour days are long gone, The seafront Casinos accept anyone now, it was a limited market previously now the gates are open to all just so they can get profits sky high, as long as your jeans and hoodies are clean enough and you have money to spend then your in, not such a special place anymore to go once a month to live it up in style, as thats not what they want they want daily mugs in there, but the owners/management do their bit for the community like holding charity events and sponsorship etc to gloss over the darker side.

Get your hands out your pockets Mr Thompson, you are representing the whole of the seafront traders as their chairman.

People will get the wrong impression, you look like you've just done your hard earned cash in primark then the casino.

The biggest laugh in this article is about the possibility of a cinema on the seafront.

I do not believe that at all surprise to sat theirs no money in it. With another cinema already in the town which, unless it's showing blockbusters is half full at the best of times.

With two other casinos I doubt there will be much profit in it. Mind you it beats yet another coffee shop / restaurant / charity shop that makes up most of the high street. I swear they open these businesses to go bust as it's always the same old type of shops that creates instant competition therefore denting profits, hence empty shops.

I love Casinos and I am sure I am going to like this one. Not just the gambling but the whole evening, meal ,drinks, bound to be 2 for 1 on opening. I'll be there, spending my money as I want to. Hope the disabled facillities are better than Gentings who say they have full disabled facillities but you cant get down to the party room , so not disabled friendly, they lie. My friends will like it too . Cant wait . PS I have loads of money to waste

I've never understood how people go to a casino for a night out. I've been many times, but chuck in a few quid, lose it in about 5 minutes, then leave. I'd have to spend £1,000 to be there for more than an hour... why anyone would choose one over a pub or restaurant for food or drink is beyond me! Then again, my mate used to go in there to get free sandwiches after a night out clubbing.
