Who do Labour hope will topple David Amess next year?

A Labour councillor has been chosen to fight Southend West at next year’s General Election.

Julian Ware-Lane, who represents Southend’s Milton ward, will take on sitting Conservative MP David Amess in a seat the Tories have held since the Fifties.

It is regarded as a safe seat, which the Conservative backbencher won in 2010 with a healthy majority.

Mr Ware-Lane stood in Rayleigh in 2005 and Castle Point four years ago.

He said: “It is a tremendous honour to have been chosen to represent Labour in my home constituency.

“I live within a mile of where I was born, and am committed to making my town a better place.

"I will be aiming to get Labour's message out to as many residents in Southend West as I can as there is an alternative to Conservative failure in the area, and that alternative is Labour.’’ Mr Ware-Lane was born in Westcliff and now lives in Leigh. He was elected to Milton ward – one of the Southend central areas – in 2012 and is nowpart of the ruling Independent, Labour, and Lib Dem administration on the council, albeit as a backbencher.

David Amess retained the seat he has held since 1997 four years ago, polling a healthy majority of 7,270.

Labour finished third behind the Lib Dems in that battle.

You can eat those words when UKIP manifesto comes out. I think you will be a little surprised. We have nothing left so they have my vote because after all what have the others given us but lie after lie.

On three occasions I have emailed David Amess, and on each occasion I HAVE received a reply in the post.
However, the reply was just a re-iteration of the party line, was just impersonal and obviously pre-prepared, and it was quite obvious that he wasn't remotely interested in his constituents concerns.
I have seen him swanning around polling stations on the day, and attending freebie performances at the theatre, but he would never get my vote.

Sorry Mr Ware-Lane, but if anyone manages to defeat the current incumbent of this seat it will not be you, or any Labour candidate - unless of course UKIP splits the vote as has been suggested by various pundits. I am no fan of the current elected representatives we send to Westminster, but do not want to be represented by the Labour party, especially after the mess they made of the economy during their last period of government.

Sadly, in Southend you could put a blue rosette on a monkey and it will still win the vote. People vote for the party, not for the person, so we end up with numpties.

UKIP is really not the answer, and Labour or Lib Dems (or the Greens) don't have much of a chance in Southend either. And people wonder why many people don't bother to vote - there's barely any party we do want to vote for, and for those we do want to, we know have no chance of winning, Although there are certainly parties I would vote against - but our system doesn't work that way.
