A WORLD record attempt nearly ended in tears after equipment to keep track of the event failed.

However, Dave Kate is not letting it hold him back and is already setting his sights on the next one.

Mr Kates, 59, of Hill Road, Benfleet attempted to create a Guinness World Record by punching a bag thousands of times in one hour.

In spite of the video camera failing and the tally counters unable to keep up with the pace, Mr Kates estimates he threw around 25,000 punches.

The part-time garden designer said: “I’ve been training for this for a long time and will now get ready for an official attempt at the record next year.

“If I can increase my speed further I`ll have an official Guinness attempt on the world record next year. Up until only six months ago I had believed such a speed to be humanly impossible.”

Mr Kates started speed punching to keep fit and began throwing punches ten years ago even though he has no interest in boxing.

The unofficial attempt at Benfleet Conservative Club fell short of current record holder and ex-paratrooper Paddy Doyle’s effort of 29,850.

Mr Kates said: “My first attempt was two years ago, but on my last attempt I’ve estimated I threw 25,000.

“Paddy Doyle’s record is just amazing, so to even come close to it I’m happy.”

“I really enjoy the training and I train with intensity. It’s really good for upper body strength and I train about five times a week.

“I’m good at it and it’s good fun.”

Mr Kates will next attempt to raise money for charity by pushing a person in a wheelchair along the seafront for 12 hours, clocking up 60 miles.

Money raised will go to a number of charities, including Sue Ryder and the NSPCC.
