AN exact replica of an 18th century Russian tall ship was moored at the end of Southend Pier this weekend for visitors to explore.

The 112ft-long frigate Shtandart held an open ship event for people to see what life at sea was like, 300 years ago.

The Shtandart was built and launched in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1999, nearly 300 years after the original.

After taking part in the NorthernWar as Peter’s flagship in 1719, the original was laid up as a museum ship for several years, before becoming derelict and being broken up in 1728.

The new vessel was built from the plans used for the original and was part of the Greenwich tall ship festival last weekend.

It weighs 220 tonnes and has 20 permanent crew to maintain the ship, as it is available for hire as a film or television set, or as a venue for quayside functions.
